TEMPORARY & EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE

The Portage Township Trustee's Office is committed to elevating the quality of life in Portage Township, serving Portage Township residents with temporary and emergency assistance for food, clothing, shelter and health and safety needs while assisting clients in reaching financial independence.

Portage Township residents who meet township guidelines may apply for financial assistance with their rent, and utility bills, as well as referrals to other agencies for food and clothing.  Any Portage Township resident in need of assistance is encouraged to call the Trustee's Office at 219.762.1623.

ENERGY ASSISTANCE (EAP)

The Portage Township Trustee's Office is also an Energy Assistance Site.  Energy Assistance is a federally funded block grant offered through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).  This grant provides funds for individual states to assist low-income families with the high cost of energy.

The Indiana General assembly has enacted Indiana Code 8-1-2-121 governing the termination of natural gas and electric service without the customer's request.  This law, which first became effective in 1983, states that a utility (municipally-owned, privately-owned or cooperatively-owned) may not, during the period from December 1st-March 15th of any year, terminate residential utility service to any customer who is eligible and approved for the Energy Assistance Program.

Energy Assistance Applicants, Please Note:  It may take 55 days to determine if you are eligible, and after your benefit has been awarded, it may take an additional 30 days for the utility company to process your benefit. Please continue to pay your utility bills while waiting for your energy assistance to appear on your account.

If you are receiving a direct pay benefit, it may take up to 120 days from the date of your benefit approval for your payment to be processed and mailed to you.  Please allow 120 days from the approval date before you call to check the benefit status.
